Kerry Morrison
Kerry Morrison is a professional practicing artist with 16 years of experience. She has successfully completed in excess of 38 environmental Public Art residencies and commissions in the UK and overseas. Her work includes: permanent, semi permanent, and temporary site specific artworks for varying locations including woodlands, public city and town parks, rural sites, city centres, hospitals, universities, and galleries.
From 1989 to 2001 she worked predominantly as a work carver, perfecting a carving technique using solely chainsaws. Her last woodcarving was in 2002.
In 2001, Kerry began collaborating with environmentalists to produce digital macro and micro photographic images integrated with text; issue based work disseminating environmental information to a broad and diverse audience.
“Working within and responding to the natural environment, I became increasingly aware of the necessity for my work to be scientifically informed, and to be able to disseminate environmental issues and debates within a Public/Community forum. This lead to my initiating collaborations and working partnerships with ecologists and environmental scientists. Through collaboration I found that the factual information imparted was condensed, and digested in lay terms. As a non-scientist, I am able to translate scientific data into an aesthetic and visual interpretation that can inform a non-science audience.
My practice has moved away from wood carved Public Art and into new technologies, mixed media and live art.
I now regard my artwork as being process led, socially based, environmental art practice, with a strong emphasis on collaboration.
The “public” is still at the centre of my practice but the way I, and the work, interact with the public has changed".
Art can play an active role in raising awareness of our environment and take positive action towards addressing ecological concerns, issues, and preconceptions.
The selected works on these pages illustrates Kerry’s work from 1997 to the present
