Installation. Commissioned by Gallery Oldham examining the impact of globalization through the study of one alien plant: Himalayan Balsam Two series of backlit transparencies printed onto Perspex, each 72"x48', Soil Samples collected from study sites of the artist and scientist listing all plant species within the 1m quadrat sample areas, and text. The installation investigated the threats to UK biodiversity by one of the UK's main terrestrial non indigenous invasive plant species, Himalayan Balsam, (Impatiens glandulifera), by exploring the interactions of this species with indigenous British species and with humans. How much is our antipathy towards non indigenous species a reflection of our own prejudices? Within a cosmopolitan community, does discrimination and efforts to eradicate the conspicuous alien really pay dividends?
